My Tho

Mytho City is 70km from Vinh Long, 70km from Ho Chi Minh City, 103km from Can Tho City, 179km from Chau Doc, 182km from Rach Gia.

Getting there:
Mytho City is 70km from Vinh Long, 70km from Ho Chi Minh City, 103km from Can Tho City, 179km from Chau Doc, 182km from Rach Gia.

Road: There are bus connections with Vinh Long, Chau Doc, Ca Mau, and other destinations in the Mekong Delta.
Ho Chi Minh: Mien Tay bus station ( Ben xe Mien Tay ) to My Tho Bus station.  ( Ben Xe My tho)
Water: A high-speed boat leaves from Ho Chi Minh City daily to Mytho and Can Tho( depends on water level of the river)
There is also boat tours around Mytho.

Vinh Trang Pagoda
In 1849,Vinh Trang pagoda was build on the area of over 2,000 m2, , in  My Phong village, My Tho City, in the shape of   “Nation” letter of chinese characters, including four large departments connected with each other: the front department, the main department, the worship department, and the back department, bearing a combination of European-Asian architecture and creating a splendid beauty, solemnity, but purity.
The extremely beautiful structures  in the pagoda are two triumphal arches bearing an art of inserting bottle  and porcelain fragments which create harmonious pictures illustrating the Buddha’s legendaries. Inside the pagoda, there is a set of pictures “ eight angels riding on animals” another set of  statues of the Amitabha Holy Trinity carved in bronze, as big as a man, and more particularly, the set of the eighteen Arhants, wood carving work, is the only one, not two, in the west of South Vietnam, made by a  number of artists in 1907.
Arriving in My Tho City, visitors will easily find a four - story Trade Center of My Tho where all kinds of items are sold. The basement is a place where fruits, and household items are sold. The upper floors are for clothes, footwears, cosmetics, etc. Besides, visitors also find My Tho market on Le  Van Duyet street a lot of necessary items for themselves. Particularly, My Tho market has a busy market of fruits, flowers, etc.
Dong Tam Snake-Breeding Farm
Dong Tam Snake-Breeding Farm is 12km from Mytho City, Tien Giang Province.
The snake farm is a center for breeding snakes producing venom for exportation.
Dong Tam is medicinal plant cultivation and the study and treatment of snake-bite. There is a snake-breeding zone with dozens of species to feed or even to play with. There are also crocodiles and other species of birds and animals on hand.
Thoi Son Island
Thoi Son Island, accessible by a 45-minute boat ride on the Mekong River from Mytho City, is located in Chau Thanh District, Tien Giang Province.
The path through the island is bordered with fruit trees bearing plums, mangoes, and longans.
Since 1990, Thoi Son has become a tourist resort welcoming hundreds of visitors. The tiled-roof houses surrounded by many generations of fruit-bearing trees, the cozy little restaurants in bonsai tree gardens make of Thoi Son Island the ideal location for a short rest.
The path through the island is bordered with fruit trees bearing plums, mangoes, and longans. Visitors will also enjoy Con Phung Island, and coconut sweets and jams.
Go Thanh Oc- Eo Cultural site
Valuable statues: the Vinus, the Negasa, the Male Angel with things in nature made of Gold, bronze and pottery which contribute to the affirming of positive value of the Go Thanh Oc Eo cultural site in Tan Thuan village, Cho Gao district, about 10 kilometers from My Tho City in the North- East.
The historical site dated back from the beginning of the first century to the 6th century, AD, opens for cultural research in the south of the province.
In 1994, the Go Thanh archaeological site was recognized by the Ministry of Culture and Information as a national site.
Getting around:
Cai Be Floating Market
Cai Be Floating Market is held where the Tien Giang River forms the border between the provinces of Tien Giang, Vinh Long, and Ben Tre. It takes about one hour to reach the market from the town of Vinh Long Province.
Approximately 400 to 500 boats filled with fruits, vegetables, and other products are anchored along the banks of the river, from 5 am to 5 pm every day.
The merchandise sold in each boat is hung on a pole in front of the boat to attract customers.
The Royal temples
The tombs of the four great herors
Lying on the 30/4 street, some ten meters from the People’s Committee of Cai Lay District, There is a place for the cult of the four national heroes. They  were Messrs . Long, Tan, Rong, Duoc. The temple’s gate has two verses showing the greatness and uprightness of the four heroes:
-Remember these four heroes forever.
-For sacrificing their lives for the fatherland.
-Their generous and brave spirit live forever.
Every year, on December 12th, the people of the Cai Lay district crowdedly concentrate to solemnly host their death anniversaries and respectfully remember them for the self-sacrifice for the fatherland, killing the enemy for the inhabitants and setting examples for the future generations.

Truong Dinh Temple
Truong Dinh, born in 1820 in Quang Ngai, province in Central Vietnam, got married to a southern woman in Tien Giang province in South Vietnam and settled at his wife’s native village. He was the first person to defoliate waste land in order to set up new hamlets in Tan Hoa District (now Go Cong Town). He  was nominated for the post of an administrator. During the years of his resistance against the French colonial rule, he commanded the people to uprise and make the enemy terrified out of his wits.
But because of Huynh Cong Tan’s  betrayal, Truong Dinh killed  himself  on August 20th 1864. The people buried him at Go Cong town. Now, The historical site of Truong Dinh includes a monument and a temple situated at Go Cong town. His tomb was built from laterite with special paste called “O Duoc” in Vietnamese on the surface of 67 m2. The face of the stele engraved with “ Great Vietnam with a great general of genius, who was awarded with the fifth Merit Medal and a duke, Trung Dinh’s stele”. Truong Dinh temple is not only  a historical site, but also a style of structure of a tomb symbolizing for the people of South Vietnam.

Royal Temple
Is situated at Go Son Quy in Go Cong town, built on the surface of 2,987 m2 in 1826. The Temple includes the Pham’ graves (King Tu Duc’s relation on the mother’s side) and Pham Dang Hung, a famous man for remarkable talent and virtue, the temple with big and high poles painted in red lacquer and yellow. This is a historical site reflecting architectural techniques in the Nguyen Dynasty and traditionally engraving arts in Go Cong. Here, there are steles engraved a past history in the Southwestern part of Vietnam. The Royal Tomb was recognized as a national relic in 1992 by the Ministry of Culture and Information.

Once Braver
Ap Bac Victory (January 2nd, 1963) at Tan Phu village, Cai Lay district is an important point in the Tien Giang people’s revolutionary struggle history, is one of the glorious and heroic events in the history made by the liberation soldiers and people in South Vietnam in the resistance for national savation. The Ap  Bac  victory  defeated the two main tactics in the special war: “ Heliborne and tank operations”, to upset the enemy’s pacification programmes in the Mekong Delta Region. The sound of the Ap Bac victory overcame space and exists forever with the time. It forcefully and fluently proves that the tradition of loving the country with heroic, creative, and intelligent will and tactics of the soldiers and the people of Vietnam in the liberation struggle so as to liberate and re-unify the country. It is over 20km from My Tho city in the west, and about  1 kilometer from National Road No 1A, visitors can see Ap Bac victory statue showing the heroic spirit of the past
A thousand-year fortress historycal site
The fortress is a strong fort. Its foundation is made from laterite and green stone with 8 m in the height. The four sides have gates, watch- towers, and fences. The middle part of the fort is a weapon warehouse, a well, and a commanding post (CP). The fort was built in the hexagon. The rocks used for embank-ment were taken from Bien Hoa by boats and were sunk at the bed of the river and still exist till today. This site is found in Phu Tan village,Go Cong Dong district. Hero Truong Dinh commanded the people to built it on a special terrain surrounded by the sea with sand-banks, mud, and thick jumgle. Particularly, in the north, there is the Cua Tieu River (small branch) with a stone dam for defense where a cannon was placed to defense the important area in the south of the nation.

The Ancient temples in Tien Giang
Long Trung Temple:
 in Long Trung village, Cai Lay District, was built at the end of  19th century. The temple was designed in the accordance with Chinese and South Vietnamese traditionally artful structure, an attached house with a guest-house, a main house, and a lounge. Inside the temple, there is a piece of board engraved, “Long Hung beautiful temple” in Chinese characters,  which is considered as a precious and beautiful masterpiece. In 1999, the temple was recognized as a national architecture relic.

Long Hung temple:
a historical site of revolution in Long Hung village, Chau Thanh District, Tien Giang province, was built by the end of 19th century with the surface of 129.6 m2 wide. After being recognized as a national relic, the temple was renewed in 1996. Inside the temple has a stone altar whose legs were engraved to workship the four supernatural creatures(dragon, unicorn, tortoise and phoenix), Le Van Duyet’s plaster statue, a bronze gong, pairs of verse lines which correspond to each other, scrolls in red lacquer with golden rims. In 1940, it was headquaters of South Vietnam uprising movement and where the red flag with yellow star was displayed for the first time.

Tan Hiep Temple:
a large-scale architectural work with carved pieces bearing the locally traditional culture, was built in 1851 at Tan Hiep town, Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province. Nowadays, the temple still maintains two horizontal masterpieces which won the first prize at a competitive show in Paris in 1923.
